You Can’t Beat a Computer at Anything

We all like to think we have certain skills that make us special and unique. To some extent, that’s true. However, we’re at a point in time where anything we can do, computers can do better. Our headline might be slightly misleading because there are still certain things we can do better than computers. However, the walls are closing in, and fast. Technology is advancing at an exponential rate and, in a few decades, we may become second-class citizens.

If you don’t believe us, just take a look at the current state of artificial intelligence (AI). From relatively rudimentary products, the latest innovations are impressive and shocking in equal measure. ChatGPT is a great example of AI’s rapid evolution. Hitting the open market in November 2022, this advanced chatbot is now capable of passing medical exams.

OK, but I’m not trying to pass a medical exam, so why should I care? That’s a fair point, but computers can still do it better than you. In fact, let’s take something you probably know a little bit more about than medicine: video games. If you’re a regular visitor to Unwinnable, you probably love video games. You probably even think you could set up your own video game company because you know so much about the industry. But, there is much more to it than that, and we’ll explore this further below.

You Can’t Even Choose Names Better than Computers

That may very well be the case but, unfortunately, computers would be better at it than you. Even for a task as seemingly simple as coming up with a company name, AI beats you. Why? Because an AI-powered name generator for video game companies takes into account variables that make monikers easy to find online. Specifically, a business name generator considers keywords, URL compatibility, how searchable a word is, length, and structure. Even if you could do all of these things, an AI generator does it in seconds and it comes up with hundreds of possible names.

So, again, computers win. OK, but can computers do somersaults and jump better than me?. Yes, they do require a ton of pre-programming and things definitely don’t work perfectly the first time, but the robots from Boston Dynamics are close (if they’re not already there) to doing physical tasks better than you. Atlas, the “most dynamic humanoid robot” in the world, can climb, swing like a monkey, and do backflips. Don’t believe us? Check out the video below.

OK, so what’s the point of all this? We’re not trying to make you feel inferior. In fact, quite the opposite. Humans created AI-powered machines. They’re a reflection of our collective skills and intelligence as a species. Moreover, they can’t do everything we can do. The reality, at least for the next couple of decades or so, is that computers will enhance our lives. Will machines ever take over? It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely. Computers can do a lot of things better than us, but they’ll never be human, which is a quality we should cherish.
