Subscription Type

Subscribers get the current month’s issue when subscribing. When you subscribe, we will email you directly to give you the back issue archive, to set up your access to the Slack and, if you purchase a gift subscription, to get the recipient’s email address – this is a one-time email, we won’t bug you after that. Our sales process is not automated, we fill every order manually, so please be patient if ordering at night, on weekends or during holidays. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please drop us a line at subscriptions@unwinnable.com.

Subscription Drive Goals and Rewards

For every 25 new subscribers we get, our managing editor Amanda will create an illustration of two characters from popular culture making out. The first, once we hit 25, will be of Eddie Brock and Venom. These will be hi-res wallpapers free to all to download. Ship suggestions are welcome!

When we hit 50 subscribers, we will produce a guide to freelancing aimed at best practices that protect the well being of writers and, hopefully, foster equitable change within the freelance writing ecosystem. We’ll release that to the world for free.

100 subscribers guarantees that the staff mutiny is a success. They will take over the May issue of the Monthly and dedicate it to . . . drum roll please . . . PETS.

150 subscribers will unlock two ongoing streams. The first will be dedicated to a live play of the staff playing World Wide Wrestling, a storytelling tabletop RPG. The second will see our social media editor, Melissa King dragging editor-in-chief Stu Horvath kicking & screaming into the world of Overwatch. That’s right, she’s going to teach him to play and we’re going to stream every agonizing minute of it. His complaining will be legendary.

Finally, if we can hit 200 new subscribers by January 2, we’ll put together a special publication dedicated to media Fashion – games, KPOP, movies, you name it. That will be released in September, free for subscribers.

About Unwinnable
Unwinnable is Different. An award-winning website and magazine, our cultural criticism ranges from the silly (like this photo essay on sex toys) to the serious (like Yussef Cole’s look at the racist roots of Cuphead‘s animation style). We let our writers – fresh amateurs and experienced veterans alike – have free reign, meaning the stories you read here are unlike any other. We embrace all kinds of writing, on all kinds of subjects, by all kinds of people.

Being Different can be hard, though. A lot of people don’t get Different. Advertisers certainly don’t. That means Different needs your help. The only way a publication like Unwinnable can survive is through your support and your subscriptions. We’re asking you, you wonderful people, to help us spread the word. Every new subscriber is one more true believer in thoughtful cultural criticism and subscriptions dollars go directly towards paying our writers. Together, we can stay Different!
