Letter from the Editor

Unwinnable Monthly – November 2024

A boot, a scorpion, and the wheel of a car in a desert wasteland.

This is a reprint of the letter from the editor in Unwinnable Monthly Issue 181. You can buy Issue 181 now, or purchase a monthly subscription to make sure you never miss an issue!

Dear Reader,

I hope this finds you. I hope it makes its way to you and that you too find this little letter and think, ah, here is Unwinnable to water my crops, if only for a moment.

I know it can be difficult to think about games or movies and stuff right now, but we’re keeping the lights on for you. A welcoming port in a storm. One we’ll keep open as long as we can. As a reader-supported magazine, know that all of this is for you. And you’re my favorites for it. Though many of us just aren’t feeling it right now, we still wanted you to have our little magazine. Truly, I hope this finds you.

For our cover (by Amy Sharp) Maddi Chilton takes the reigns of a desert convoy. Maddi came to me in the way that most of my favorite features come to me. By asking “what is the longest version of [idea] that you will entertain?”

For this month’s Funeral Rites, brought to you by Exalted Funeral, Emma Kostopolus looks at the orderly city of Arkos and the chaos of The Forest Primordia.

As for the accounting of our regular rogues . . . Mostly the back half of the alphabet? Matt Marrone places products (none of which the board endorses). Noah Springer goes to the hospital, gets drugs. Natasha Ochshorn goes to Middle Earth, comes back with great ideas! Emily Price restarts the Inquisition. Justin Reeve goes to a nice little family run inn. Rob Rich buys the farm. He loves the farm, honestly. Levi Rubeck opens a pack of quirky games. Ben Sailer’s life was changed in a way I think might be familiar to a lot of us, a random demo disk. Alyssa Wejebe goes really hard in on a theme and I love it!

I also want to point out that we’ll be shuttering our Twitter and migrating to Bluesky. It’s been a long time coming but we’re finally going to pull the plug and migrate to a place where our dear culture vultures can feel safer. For the more photo oriented, check out our Instagram!

See you all in the next Exploits!
