Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground

If you’re a fan of old-school arcade games, it’s likely that you’ll have enjoyed the games that were once released by Capcom.

The game developer is perhaps more famous for its Street Fighter franchise, but it had some other options that were available that did well when they were first released. These were franchises that deserved their own games and could potentially benefit from a revival of somewhat, especially with a new generation of gamers to target that may never have heard of them before…

Darkstalkers

One of Capcom’s most unique games to have ever been released, Darkstalkers could certainly benefit in today’s market and be a success if there were to be a remake. The game featured horror-inspired characters, each with special features and attacks that could help them overcome their opponents.

Admittedly, it was a whacky game and one that had some unique characters, but it could be successful as an esports title. The betting industry is continually booming and with a new esports on the market following the same premise, it could easily be a game that many would look to play and try and master, as well as potentially wager on. The last one was released in 2013, with Darkstalkers: Resurrection which copied the game that was released in 1998. Now could be the time to resurrect it even further, especially as new technologies are available.

Rival Schools

Capcom started off with Rival Schools as one of its first fighting games which used something very unique at the time: high school students. Students and teachers would disappear, while competing schools would engage in entertaining duels with each other.

It was a simple game and one that involved simple gameplay mechanics, making it popular at the time of its initial release. It’s a game that could benefit from a remaster, but it might need a little more work than Darkstalkers and Power Stone…

Power Stone

A game that allowed players to control one of several different characters, Power Stone is a little like Street Fighter in that everyone had their own special abilities and attacks that they could unleash on their opponent. Capcom could consider going down the same route that they did with their most iconic franchise and make it available as one of the real money slots that can be enjoyed, or they could look to release a version as a video game once again…

The game can continue to use the same features, such as requiring players to collect three Power Stones that allow their character to transform temporarily and boost their attacking prowess. It’s a simple game with graphics that can be enhanced, as the gameplay is effortless and allows casual gamers to also get involved in the action.

Could we see Capcom look to revive these games?

There is no reason why Capcom couldn’t look to revive these titles, but it does look very unlikely that they are going to any time soon. There hasn’t been any movement on new releases outside of the Street Fighter or Capcom vs. series for the last 10 years, and when they used to release several each year before the 2000s, it’d be a big surprise if the game developer ever did look to do so.

Nonetheless, if they featured the three series that have been outlined, not many would be too unhappy about it.
