Last Week’s Comics: Not So Silent Interlude
I’ve been in a funk all week. I think a lot of us have.
I am a white cis straight male. I am the definition of privilege in the United States of America. I thought by being progressive and supporting diversity with my wallet and my Twitter account, I was doing my part. Clearly, that was not enough. I let my naivete and privilege blind me to how dire people were. President Elect Trump’s campaign rhetoric and cabinet appointments make this country more dangerous for women, Muslims, the LGBTQ community and people of color. They have faced a terrifying uptick in violence and threats of violence this past week. It’s disgusting.
I read Stu’s reaffirmation of what Unwinnable is all about on Tuesday. Stu is right. Art is important. It’s born as the artist’s reaction to the surrounding world. Here in Last Week’s Comics, the art form we choose to celebrate and critique is comics. LWC has been running for a little over 5 years. In that time, we’ve reviewed a helluva lot of comics. We made some good calls and some bad ones like everybody else but the thing that’s been bugging me most is how we need to do better when it comes to covering diversity in comics. Turns out it’s been bugging the Last Week’s Comics team too, so it’s high time we use our space to fight the culture of hate that’s spread across this country.
Women and men of color, the LGBTQ community – anyone who is not a white cis straight male, we at Last Week’s Comics want to write about your comics! Do you want to join our wayward band of writers? Get at me!

It’s a small start, but as the saying goes, every journey has a first step.
