On the Use of GenAI at Unwinnable
Dear Unwinnable Community,
This is long overdue. Here at Unwinnable, we do not like Generative AI.
As such, we’re updating our policies to be reflective of how destructive a force it is for our industry and for the culture at large.
We will not accept any submission (pitch, filing, artwork, etc.) that was generated by AI. If you submit material generated by AI and we catch you, you will be banned and blocked.
There will not be a review of previous submissions. From today forward, if you do it, you’re done. This is not meant to impact traditional aids such as autocorrect, spot healing, or other tools long considered normative but that may have AI “enhancements” added without your knowledge. The point of this policy is to center our humanity. If you have a special case or need, talk to us, we’re people with human judgement. For example, Matt Marrone’s piece here which he had specific permission for.
As we learn more and more about GenAI, it is clear that there is no GenAI derivate work that is not built on stolen material. GenAI is an existential threat to everything we value here at Unwinnable. We’ve long bemoaned the march to a monoculture but here it is. A dystopian present where a machine trained on millions of individual acts of theft remixes those crimes into a watered-down shadow of the creative might it was trained in. We won’t stand for it.
We’ve said it before and its worth saying again. We protect the writers at all costs.
