Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Revives a Game That Nearly Lost It All
Cyberpunk 2077 was launched to a series of mixed receptions from fans who highly anticipated the game before its release. While some critics praised the game’s storyline, gameplay, and wonderful design, they didn’t fail to mention that the game’s exciting features were blurred by its numerous bugs, glitches, and poor optimization, which were all even more apparent on consoles. The technical issues with the game led to widespread criticism and disappointment among players. This pushed the developer, CD Projekt Red, to dedicate the Cyberpunk 2077 development team to continually release patches and updates to address the issues and improve the game.
One of the many updates released by CD Projekt Red was the Phantom Liberty DLC, which was more of a game changer than a mere update. Phantom Liberty helped to improve the game’s quality, leading to a decrease in the widespread criticism from players by further refining the Cyberpunk experience. The DLC expanded on the game’s narrative, introducing new characters and plotlines that added depth to the world of Night City, which directly addressed one of the game’s initial criticisms: a lack of engaging storytelling.
This was further improved with notable inclusions like a new, action-packed storyline, a new district called Dogtown, and enhanced audio, visuals, and gameplay, all of which increased the game’s replayability. Furthermore, Phantom Liberty‘s introduced new skills and abilities which allowed players to approach missions in more creative and strategic ways. These changes, combined with the game’s previously existing strong points, helped to transform Cyberpunk 2077 into a more complete and engaging experience.
Of course, there were some significant updates and patches released before Phantom Liberty, such as the Edgerunners Update, which was released alongside Cyberpunk Edgerunners – an anime where a poor teenage student who lost his mother drops out of school and tries to survive in the cruel world as a cyberpunk. The update brought a full wardrobe transmog/wardrobe system, new weapons and equipment, new gigs, and other great inclusions based on the Edgerunners anime.
The Phantom Liberty DLC played a major role in bringing Cyberpunk 2077 back to the top of recent RPGs. Whether or not the latest, and possibly final, update does the same remains a mystery.
