The release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 has yet to be confirmed, but that hasn’t stopped the gaming community from speculating about when it may land.
Somewhere between 2022 and 2024 is the general consensus across the industry, which is about as helpful as a chocolate fireguard.
Developers Rockstar Games tend to keep their cards close to their chest, and official announcements spark as much as excitement as playing immersive jackpotjoy games.
While a release date has not been forthcoming, there have been plenty of rumours about what GTA 6 may look like. Here are a few that we think may happen.
GTA heading to Brazil?
Sorting out fact from fiction is no easy task when it comes to GTA 6 rumours, but one that may have some legs is the game could include a Rio De Janeiro map.
Fans on the GTA 6 subreddit went into overdrive after spotting similarities between a recently leaked map and the iconic Brazilian city.
There has also been another rumour that GTA 6 is being developed under codename ‘Project Americas’, adding weight to the belief that Rio may feature in the game.
New York and Los Angeles have traditionally been the most common settings, and a move elsewhere would be welcomed by fans of the series.
Past or modern?
Respected gaming insider Tom Henderson has previously been a reliable source of information for games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield 6.
On that basis, his comment on social media that GTA 6 will be set in modern times rather than the 1980s may have plenty of merit.
Fans have been clamouring for a game along the lines of GTA Vice City, and Rockstar could well be considering throwing a curveball into the mix.
However, a full-blown return to the 80s seems unlikely given the time that Rockstar have spent building up modern assets on GTA Online.
A playable female protagonist?
Another Henderson rumour which has got GTA fans excited is his claim that the new release will feature a playable female protagonist.
GTA 5 featured three protagonists – Franklin, Trevor and Michael – following in the trend of the game’s main characters being male.
Females have featured prominently in previous games, but none have been a protagonist and this is something that Rockstar may feel should be rectified.
There have been further rumours that the new game will feature two main characters, one of which will be a female ‘gangsta’.
Virtual reality for GTA?
One of the most prominent rumours relating to GTA 6 surrounds the possibility that the game will be launched with full support for VR.
Australian development studio Video Games Deluxe confirmed that it was a working on a new project for Rockstar, sparking rumours that this was for GTA.
The studio previously worked on the VR adaption of LA Noire for PC and PSVR, so a link-up on GTA 6 certainly makes plenty of sense.
However, a more likely option is that GTA 6 will offer selected missions on VR rather than every single element of the game.
