Five Key Chiefs Players to Watch in Super Bowl LV

  • The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs look to become the first team to repeat as champions of the NFL in more than 15 years. Andy Reid’s team is ranked in the top 10 in both points scored and fewest points allowed and figures to be a tough opponent to beat in Super Bowl LV.

Here is a look at five players who will be key performers for the Chiefs in this year’s Super Bowl:

    1. QB Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes is one of the favorites to win the league MVP for a reason. The Chiefs quarterback has one of the strongest arms in the league and isn’t afraid to make any kind of throw anywhere on the field. He almost seems like a magician at times, making plays that you didn’t think were possible in ways you didn’t expect.

The son of a former Major League pitcher, Mahomes is cool under pressure and an excellent leader. He threw for 4,740 yards this season and 38 touchdowns while tossing only six interceptions and the statisticians at Betway Sports think he is the engine that makes the Kansas City offense go.

    2. TE Travis Kelce

Kelce is the most productive tight end in the NFL and few players can match his combination of size, agility and hands. The former University of Cincinnati star caught 105 passes for 1,416 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.

Kelce is Mahomes’ favorite target in the red zone and when the team needs a key first down. He uses his size and his knowledge of defenses to find soft spots in the zone defenses that the Bucs like to play. He is also difficult to tackle which means he often gains extra yards after the catch.

    3. WR Tyreek Hill

Like Kelce, Hill made the Pro Bowl this season after catching 87 passes for 1,276 yards and 15 touchdowns. He has outstanding speed and is a threat to score any time he touches the ball.

The West Alabama alum scored five touchdowns of 40 yards or more and if he gets a step on you, he’s almost impossible to catch from behind.

Hill had three touchdowns against the Bucs when these teams met on November 29 and Tampa Bay must find a way to slow him down if they hope to win the rematch.

    4. DT Chris Jones

Jones is one of the best interior defensive linemen in the game at penetrating and creating pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The 6’6”, 310-pound former Mississippi State star recorded 7.5 sacks this season to lead the Chiefs in that category.

Even when he doesn’t sack the quarterback, Jones can disrupt the pocket and force an errant throw. He was credited with 28 quarterback hits and three tackles for loss this season. He also recorded his first career safety.

The Bucs must contain Jones if they hope to run the ball between the tackles and to give Brady enough time to throw the football.

    5. S Tyrann Mathieu

Mathieu is only 5’9” but his speed and tenacious hitting earned him the nickname “The Honey Badger.” He led the Chiefs with six interceptions this season and was named to the NFL’s All-Pro Team for the second straight season.

Mathieu can defend against the run as well as the pass and he can also blitz the quarterback on occasion. Tom Brady will have to account for Mathieu if he hopes to have a big day against the Chiefs defense.

Any one of these players has a chance to earn a spot on the all-time Super Bowl team.
