So you’ve met someone on a dating website or in some more conventional setting and have already spent a few dates getting to know them better, perhaps sharing a few drinks or enjoying a meal together? Now you’ve suggested an evening in front of a screen – either at your local multiplex or in front of a TV – watching a movie. Films have certainly been an integral part of dating for decades, but the big question is which film? How about a Marvel movie – big, bold, and hugely entertaining? That’s fine, but it leads to another question. Which Marvel film? Here are five of the best to watch on your first date.
Spider-Man: The Homecoming (2017)
The latest incarnation of the arachnid superhero, Tom Holland, is somewhat doe-eyed in a universe where the leads are invariably square-jawed. But his struggle to control his newfound powers lends the character a vulnerability which any first daters will find it far easier to identify with than all that trademark bravado.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Marvel movies have an image of being a testosterone-fuelled battle between chest-beating nemeses, but this feature is memorable as being the first to feature a female superhero taking center-stage. Played with high-kicking verve by Brie Larson, Captain Marvel, or Vers, specializes in gravity-defying martial arts moves. As a fierce combatant, her story is even better than a more obvious female superhero like Wonder Woman, because her back story highlights her complex human emotions. She is a former US Air Force pilot, whose DNA is mutated by an accident to give her superhuman qualities. Her aggressive skills aren’t always displayed gratuitously, but often as character flaws.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Another film to get your teeth into as you share your popcorn, this 2018 sequel to Ant-Man is even brasher, faster and funnier than the original. Paul Rudd plays the lead character with the ability to scale down to the size of an insect and then shoot around all over the place (and who wouldn’t, if you suddenly became small enough to explore a whole new dimension?) Evangeline Lilly plays the Wasp, who is also the daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), the latter bringing disgruntlement to a whole new level. Again, flash action sequences are matched with solid performances.
The Avengers (2012)
If either you or your partner is a Marvel virgin, this is an ideal introduction as it pitches several superheroes together in one good guy alliance. The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jnr), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) face Thor’s nemesis and evil brother Loki (Tom Eddleston), who has joined forces with aliens seeking to subjugate Earth. Upon its release, it shattered numerous box office records (film from 2012, superhero film, Walt Disney release), and became one of the 12 titles to have grossed over a billion dollars (in less than three weeks.) Terrific entertainment.
Iron Man (2008)
Definitely one of the most visually impressive of the Marvel franchise, with jaw-dropping special effects, Iron Man is perfect for your date night. Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Robert Downey Jnr as the eponymous superhero, the story commences with Iron Man aka Stephen Strange, traveling to the Far East on a quest for enlightenment. Here he hones all sorts of magic abilities, including teleportation and imagining weapons to life. But the film’s most exhilarating moments come when Strange dons the superhero armor, taking the viewer with him as he soars through the air, doing battle, or simply enjoying the ride. As you definitely will, too.
