  • It’s fair to say to say that some of the most memorable movie scenes of all time revolve around the casino in some way or another. What’s more, it’s now easier than ever to watch such movies without ever having to leave your sofa thanks to streaming platforms such as Netflix. With the sheer amount of gambling-related movies that are currently available on the platform, it can be hard to find out which ones are worth your time. That’s why we’ve picked out seven of the best gambling movies for you to get your teeth into.

With a star studded cast and fantastic plot, Rounders is considered by many to be the poker movie to end all poker movies. A young Matt Damon stars as Mike McDermott, a law student and poker genius who delves into the dangerous New York underground poker scene in an attempt to raise enough money to compete at the World Series of Poker. Brilliantly supported by Edward Norton and John Turturro, Rounders is without a doubt one of the finest gambling related movies of all time.

    Ocean’s 11
With the upcoming all-female remake scheduled to be released later this year, it would be remiss of us to not mention the 2001 remake of the 1960’s rat pack comedy. Once again, the movie boasts a who’s who cast of Hollywood elite actors, with George Clooney leading ten other professional criminals in one of the biggest bank heists on record. Of course, things don’t quite to go plan and as a result, the whole operation gets a bit messy (as you can imagine).

Any movie that’s named Casino has to be an excellent attempt to capture the excitement of the casino floor, right? Right. The movie is based on the book of the same by Nicholas Pileggi and documents the rise and subsequent fall of the owner of the Tangiers casino, Sam Rosenthal, who got a little bit too involved with the mob for his own good. Casino stars Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, as well as being directed by the inimitable Martin Scorcese. Enough said.

    James Bond: Casino Royale (1967)
Ah, James Bond. The quintessential British ass-kicking agent. We already know they love their casinos in the UK owing to the vast array of online casinos available over there and the sheer number of players. We also know they love James Bond, so what better way to bring those two loves together than by making a film where Bond has to play and win a game of baccarat in order to take down Le Chivre, a terrorist financier? We certainly can’t think of one.

Without a doubt one of the most gritty movies on the list, Croupier offers a fantastic insight into the world of a professional casino dealer. Instead of focussing on the glitz and glamour often associated with the bright lights of Vegas, Croupier instead centers around a smaller establishment in London and highlights the darker side of gambling when you have everything to lose.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Now a celebrated cult classic, this Terry Gilliam film saw Johnny Depp widely praised for his portrayal as Hunter S Thompson and his three-day road trip across Western America with his lawyer in the form of an overweight Benicio del Toro in an attempt to chase the American dream. While this movie is without a doubt the most “out there” on the list, it’s a very fun ride if you stick with it.

    Bachelor Party: Vegas
We’ve already been through the movies with the most gritty and realistic approaches to the casino so it makes sense to end on the most film on the list. A group of friends decide that Vegas is the perfect venue to celebrate their friend’s wedding but unknowingly hire a fugitive as their wedding planner. If you’re into comedy then, this is without a doubt where you should start.

    The Choice Is Yours
While this isn’t an exhaustive list, there’s certainly something for everyone and whether you want smart and stylish, dark or simply balls to the wall crazy then you’re bound to find a casino related movie on the list which takes your fancy. So what are you waiting for? Fire up your Netflix, pick a movie and get watching!
