It all started back in 1963. The film follows a clumsy French detective named Jacques Clouseau who must stop the infamous thief, Phantom, from stealing a valuable diamond called the Pink Panther. The classic film evokes a bygone era with screen heroes dressed in suits, subtle witticism, and a seductive line for every scene. At the time of its release, no one could predict the success this comedy-mystery would later become.
The Birth of an Icon – Pink Panther History
Looking back, The Pink Panther has been around for decades. In fact, the cunning cat first got it’s claim to fame back in the early 60s with the release of the comedy-mystery film, “The Pink Panther” starring Peter Sellers. The opening of the debut film features an animation sequence with the cartoon panther himself accompanied by that famous jazzy theme music by Henry Mancini (which remains my phone ringtone, by the way). The Pink Panther character continued to gain popularity with the subsequent release of a handful of films during the 60s, 70s, and even as recently as 2009.
What’s in a name?
Where did they get the name Pink Panther anyway? That all started in the films. The Pink Panther actually represents a large, valuable pink diamond. The diamond received the nickname “Pink Panther” because the flaw in the center resembled a leaping pink panther.
The Pink Panther Movies – A Film Becomes a Franchise
Altogether, the Pink Panther inspired a dozen or so movies. After the huge success of the first film, the 1960s saw the release of “A Shot in the Dark” and “Inspector Clouseau”, all which have received high critical acclaim. Although a “Shot in the Dark” did not feature the distinctive cartoon or Inspector Clouseau, many consider this the best film of the entire series
With the success of the first several films, more Pink Panther live action movies came out over the next 15 years. The Pink Panther even received its own Saturday morning cartoon series in the 70s. Later, Hollywood rebooted the series with the release of “The Pink Panther” in 2006 starring Steve Martin as Clouseau with co-stars Beyonce and Kevin Kline. The movie grossed $158.9 million worldwide, and Steve Martin returned in the sequel which came out in 2009.
