Like I said, when I was 16 I wanted to be a cool, charismatic, driven person, just like Zidane. I think that’s also why I loved Ocarina of Time when I was 11 or 12. Whether I realized it or not, I wanted to be the brave little hero, fighting monsters and saving the world.

I wanted to be an adult, and I wanted to play adults.

Now that I’m older, have a family, and live in a society where people in their fucking 30s still complain that they don’t feel like “real adults” yet, I’m happy for stories where children and teenagers have star roles in saving the world. We’ve forgotten that it’s puberty, not securing a second mortgage, that marks adulthood. History is studded with very young people doing very incredible things.

I want my kids to play these games and feel like that at the age of 16, they can do great things in the world. That’s not a dream. It’s not at all impossible. Kids need to know they can have a real impact, whatever boring old adults think and say.
