Thoroughly enjoyed P.N.03 when I played it years back. The stilted controls are indeed off putting but I found that getting into the groove of combat was in the spirit of the Japanese Bullet Hell shooters; zeroing in your focus between positioning and timing to get into that sweet zen spot.

This article is also making me want to dive back into Vanquish and play it with the "rockstar" intent in mind. I enjoyed the game in general like I do most cover based shooters (my preference over straight ahead first person shooters), but I felt the bullet time gimmick was self defeating and nullified the hyper kinetic sensation that sliding around in a rocket suit was meant to evoke; I felt like i was literally killing my momentum. Looking at some high-score youtube playthroughs though, I think I was playing with a more trudging ground and pound football run game mentality, when perhaps a more well timed long bomb "pass game" play style is in order.
