Hm...it perhaps depends on the game (and the age group) as I've found watching my significant other play games like Civ or the Sims interminably boring; I'd much rather be involved myself than passively observing someone else. My mother, for some reason enjoyed watching me play Dune 2, but I don't think she understood the premise (...and it's a fairly simple premise...) and could not abide watching me play Theme Park ("why are you concreting all that nice grass?!")

That said, playing Dizzy (Magic Land) on the spectrum was a great bonding experience between me and my Dad - but we'd both play, so were both invested in the other getting that little bit further or finding out something new. I remember once going to bed, and my dad yelling down "I've defeated the evil wizard Zacks!" and I raced upstairs to see, but he was lying :/ It was the days before walkthroughs (you had to call a phone-in line) and my mother called the help-line and wrote everything down to solve the game, then hid it and told us she'd get it out if we got really stuck and couldn't progress. Then she lost it and the phone-in line was disconnected =(

My ex-boyfriend's sister seemed to really enjoy watching us play Baldur's Gate and Final Fantasy Games...though certainly with the former less interested in playing it herself. She did play through and enjoy Final Fantasy X when she got older, but as far as I know that was the extent of her interest.
