It seems like you're suggesting it's impossible to have a meaningful conversation – and in many cases that's true, certainly. Lots of folks are so far into their own righteous anger that they're impossible to reach, but almost as many folks are just along for the ride, because the argument is entertainment. Often, if they're forced to take a step back and really consider what it is they're doing, they rethink their actions.

99 times out of a hundred, it's pointless to try and engage someone in the throes of internet fracas, but that hundredth time, you can get through to them. I think the attempt has value, even if it's rarely successful.
