I love the GTA games, but there is just no excuse for the controls. I played GTA IV: Liberty City Stories right after Sleeping Dogs, and that was a horrible, horrible mistake - everything in Sleeping Dogs works so much better.

I'd say I tolerate the controls because the rest of it is just so good, particularly the dialogue and the humor (something Sleeping Dogs was almost entirely missing).

I was a little thrown off by the GTAV trailer when it claimed the protagonists were 'heroes,' and again at your assumption Gus that GTA protagonists are 'dudes with a heart of gold.'
It's a total misconception and misinterpretation by the players of GTA games. Not once does Rockstar (prior to the GTAV trailer) attempt to portray these people are the 'good guys'.
They work exclusively for corrupt businessmen, gangs, drug dealers, extortionists, psychopaths etc doing all sorts of awful wet work, and players still assume we are supposed to root for these protagonists.
These are not good people. Murdering and blowing shit up is what they do.
I can't think of a protagonist from any of the GTA games that ever intended to go straight. Maybe CJ or Niko mention it early in their respective games, but their return to violence is not necessarily a disconnect.
They are drawn back into the violence by outside forces, and all they know how to respond is with more violence.
It seems disconnected to us, but maybe they don't see it that way. Maybe its intentional hypocrisy on the part of the developers. You can't escape your violent nature.
