By pushing for new hardware, it makes it easier to sell us the 'new' sequel.. It feels like its part of that new experience. Its tied into the new hardware.

I dont think its any coincidence that the most creative, genre creating, experimental games came out at the end of the consoles life cycle.

Maybe the AAA games companies have more to loose than the indie games makers at this point (the end of the cycle). These cheaper games seem so new to us at this point, that AAA games actually cant compete as well against them.

New consoles means, a new focus, AAA game makers will be king again.. and indies will have new hardware and software to learn.

I certainly don't disagree with you Jordan, the gaming audience certainly has very good reason to feel apathetic towards the industry. However I think most of your concerns have more to do with E3 specifically.
Its a bit like a debutante ball. Everyone gets dressed up, tries to smile and puts on a show to seem as charming and desirable as possible. But they all end up looking exactly the same. Personality is sidelined for politeness and formality. Its really all about the spectacle.
And even though the debutantes look and sound the same for that one day out of the year, you find they're all unique individuals.
E3 is about attracting suitors, or investors in this case. Launch titles are never the greatest games of a generation. Nor are the games presented at E3. Its the little ones released throughout the console's lifecycle that really provide something interesting.
Its a big business and, like the film industry, uses the profits from huge tentpole releases to fund the pet projects of auteurs. Of course, the gaming industry does this to a lesser extent, but they still need to sell these blockbuster titles to the masses for the easy millions.
Theres more to the upgrade in hardware than graphics, too. While the big releases are focused on using all that computing power to make your next kill look as lifelike as possible, others use it to expand the size of their world, or improve how its inhabitants live and react, to process the intricate details of a unique art style, to improve the physics and motion.
Its far too early to judge how this technology will be used and what these consoles are truly worth
