I rarely feel more alive than I do when standing on a cliff edge, a mountain top, or perhaps most emotive of all, on a sandy shore when the ocean is at its most tempestuous. We need those moments and experiences to remind us that despite what we believe, or those "all-powerful" world leaders would have us believe, we are nothing when it comes down to it - inconsequential in the greater scheme of things. It's our responsibility to make the most of the limited time we've been gifted in this world that really, isn't ours at all. "Consciousness comes in high seas..." That sums it up.

Lovely use of language in this piece. I especially love the line, "I do not feel wholly spoken for in only one shell," because it envokes a sense of being misunderstood or unrepresented when there's so much more to take in. It focuses on a detail to better focus on the big picture.

Much like Marianne Moore's poem "The Fish," this poem speaks to the heart of the very essence of the sea. The sea is both a space of making and unmaking, beginning and ending, existing around and within the creatures that inhabit it, separate from and connected to the land. By invoking the lighthouse, the poet reminds us of our connection to the ever-shifting landscape of the ocean, and presents a contemporary's understanding of this both/and space that is at once new and a reminder of how the Modernist ports presented our American landscape. Simply a lovely poem!
