I was born in the '76 and in my 20's I got that same feeling you have for the 80's but for me it was the 60's. "Who cares about that whole era?" I thought. Except for those who grew up in them or revel in the ideology of that time. I didn't really care and every VH1 special about the 60's made me nauseous. Am I suppose to care about this supposed halcyon era of drugs that didn't harm you, irresponsible freelove that never came back to haunt you and folk music that changed the world? I was being fed something that didn't exist outside the minds of those who carry that nostalgia tainted burden of memories.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's all a matter of perspective. One man's nostalgia is another man's garbage.

Also, I got older and now can appreciate the art and milieu of a time period without feeling like I'm endorsing a behavior. Psychedelic art looks cool but my saying that doesn't endorse LSD use.

Nostalgia is always about something we feel we've lost in our lives today. So, when you say "I get that the ’80s were silly" maybe that's what is missing. Everything is so po- faced now.

Well, it's not really an imperative... you don't remember the 80s, so you don't need to be nostalgic for the 80s. But the 80s are so far better than anything the 90s, 2000s, or 2010s (so far) ever produced, even with the ridiculous hair, so perhaps you could just be weeping at how much better things seemed to be 30 years ago.

Now objectively, many things are much better now - Internet, battery life, gas mileage... But in the 80s, people were much more optimistic about how life would be in 20 years, even if they were horribly wrong about that. I don't think anyone could have guessed at that time just how afraid you'd all be about everything. Hooray for the glorious cyberfuture!
