This may sound crass, but the way you've described this almost reminds me of the idea of pornography. Where pornography strips sexuality of intimacy and even true eroticism, reducing it to a mere mechanic, so many of these games have little of the larger meaning of "videogames" instead focusing on the barebones system, an ungarnished mechanic.

It was interesting that you said you were addicted to "resonance." I don't know if you saw the Atlantic article about some psychologist's research on love, but her conclusion was to define love as "micro-moments of positivity resonance." Maybe you're really just addicted to love? Maybe you're just attempting to get back to the joy of your childhood through gaming?

Haha, sorry, I didn't initially mean to play the armchair psychologist. I think I'm analyzing myself more than anyone, because this piece definitely *resonated* with me. Great writing!

Really nice piece, Richard. I've also been having trouble sleeping, and feeling like I might be running out of things to say. I too am wasting time late at night, and having it catch up to me the next day. You make a great point about being able to play a game without a mind to write about it.

I went into playing Spec Ops: The Line knowing how much has already been written about it, so I decided I wouldn't be adding any to that overcrowded category. I just played it for the experience and I really enjoyed that. It's easier said than done, but just exploring something without thinking about turning into column fodder can be refreshing. Maybe some casual multiplayer might also help you.

Great piece Rich! This inability to rest is powerful, I can't even watch a movie anymore without having my phone with me, "just in case I get bored".
