You may have put your finger on one of the reasons I didn't make it much further into Super Paper Mario than this section. I expect the Paper Mario games to be fairly-thinly-veiled fetch quests - Thousand Year Door was that, but I loved it for its combat and inventiveness - but to me SPM fell a little... flat?

The humour didn't resonate with me in the same way as it had in the previous game, the combat wasn't particularly satisfying, so what I was left with were the odd uncomfortable faux-pop culture scenarios like the one described above. Rather a shame, really.

Though I love someone giving close attention to Super Paper Mario--a game I feel gets short shrift from fans of the series--I can't agree with this analysis. I mean, um, he's a giant chameleon...? If anything, the devs are poking fun at themselves as much as any obsessive fans. The fact this seems so surprising from a Mario game just goes to show how bizarre and outside-the-box these games are, and how little credit they're given for trying new and weird and different things.
