Why is it that so many atheists seem to just stop believing in God during junior high and continue to do so into adulthood for no other reason than tortured adolescent logic? Why is it that so many atheists seem to just stop believing in God during junior high and continue to do so into adulthood for no other reason than tortured adolescent logic?

For all the wistful, uncritical appeals to "science" and "reason" Gus makes in this column, he dismisses the idea of Heaven because he felt sick in the shower one day. It doesn't seem like he's studied theology much either, but then again why would he when he can look into his own bellybutton and pull out quotes and musings with all the profundity of a Starbucks cup. Basically, he can't comprehend the world, and has retreated into hipster nihilism which sounds deep to him, but is really a way to avoid looking outside of himself.

So many thoughts inspired by that last paragraph--games let you relive your failures but not change your destinies. But then again, the simple "life" of them and their characters is only there when we turn them on, play them, become them. Once that's done, they're done.

. . . If that doesn't make you proactive in life, I don't know what will.
