I kinda like learning the mechanics of a game. But if said mechanics are too complex, I feel the need to devote myself to the game until I beat it. If there's an ending, that is. If it's a game with no ending, pretty much like Dwarf Fortress, I'll spend at least some dozens of hours of gameplay to make up for the time I spent learning how to play. There are some games that let you choose how complex you want it to be. Pokemon, for example. If you're the type of person who takes pokemon training seriously, to the point of participating in championships and such, there are tons of mechanics and little details to master. If you play it more lightly, just to kill some time or because you like those adorable little beasts, you can beat the game and have a blast without putting much thought into it. I, for example, only teach my pokemon moves that deal damage; no buffs or debuffs whatsoever. Since I always play solo, that's enough to go through the game and have fun while at it.
