Sounds like your trip was a powerful eye-opener. I've had similar experiences in the Caribbean, although I've not encountered the severity of poverty found in certain areas of Jamaica. Part of that is no doubt by design, as you say. Have you played the Tropico games at all? Having visited real-life "banana republics" gave me a whole different perspective.
