When I was a kid I was a Boy Scout. One time we went to an abandoned Naval Base at Sandy Hook NJ. There were tunnels and abandoned bunkers everywhere. Being an older scout, I took some of the younger scouts out with flashlights in the middle of the day. They were scared. The place looked like Doom, there were remnants of dirtbags and teenagers everywhere with broken beer bottles, pentagrams and graffiti with Slayer and Metallica on the walls.

It was crazy.

I saw one of the kids that was on that trip randomly a few years ago. He told me he never forgot that trip.

Fact of the matter is, I was scared shitless that day. What made me brave was the other kids in the "party."

There's a million years of biological development telling you not to go into caves. Fear is not weakness. It is evolution telling you something important.

Wow... nice article. Bravery comes in many forms though. Firefighters have the burst of bravery they need when rescuing total strangers from danger. Sky-divers mix bravery and stupidy to get the adrenaline rush. Public speakers brave the chance of ridicule. It is all bravery... The most brave of all... maybe being a parent, and watching your child grow up knowing there is nothing you can do to ease their burden as they face the world... Not because you backed up, and didn't face the challenge yourself... But just because you know in the back of your mind that they won't retreat... and they might not succeed... or even worse... they might! Which would lead to even more challenges.
