wow and DAoC are the best of these games for me, with DDO a close third because it does not require a monthly fee but still offers plenty of fun with instanced dungeons. However, I do believe that had I been playing mmorpgs in 2003, I would have played Star Wars Galaxies, it seemed like a fun sandbox which sadly has been replaced by an inferior game (in my opinion) known as SWTOR

Hmmm. I mentioned plenty of titles you list as absent. (Asheron's Cal, DAoC, Anarchy Online, Eve Online, etc) Did I devote paragraphs to them? No. I stated at the end, that there many other titles that entire articles could be written. I also mentioned in the first article that while there are other genres of MMOs, this origin piece would focus on MMORPGs. Sorry you didn't enjoy it, but from my standpoint you are being critical of areas that are addressed in the articles.

lists are always hard... as soon as you create one and publish, you realize you missed something. and honestly MMORPGs have changed a lot from ye olden days of muddz and UO. but... i felt several key mmos were left out of this listing. many of which were precursors and attempts at dynamics that are being absorbed in newer games.

the shift from UO to EQ ...should also mention turbine's Asheron's Call. the first zoneless world. Guild Wars... the biggest of the Free 2 play, as well as D&Donline is a great story.. of a games rise, fall and rebirth in the F2P model. Eve online... a great example of PvP niche game that's slowly but surely built a following. As well as other middle gen games.. like Anarachy online, or DAoC introduced either different genres(Scifi mmo), or newer concepts ..like RvR

and i think no MMO list is complete without some mention of catastrophic flops... anyone remember Sims or Matrix online? or heck, even Star Trek online. But even games that still linger like Age of Conan, or Warhammer... are interesting mentions.

and i think it's a good idea to give some credit to upstart attempts at niche games. Darkfall, or Mortal online... Mount&blade etc. To give Vindictus a nod and not these is a bit off.

Also.. the spread of the genre in general to include FPS mmos. or other variants. without that breadth. really just makes you seem like...

a WoW fanboi... who couldn't hack it in other games.
