Firstly props to Tminusfun, that was right on target. Secondly, Samus did have a personality, she mourned her fellow bounty hunters, and the destruction of the chozo temple. More than that though, you never see her in previous games break down, she always has an attitude like she was ready to handle it. In other reasoning, all the scans throughout metroid, speak of her as the great bounty hunter( lets be honest , she blew up a effing planet). Its not all nintendos fault, because thy teamed up with Ninja ( they made those games with the scantily clad weepy girls). Ninja did no research, and ended up making a story line, not condusive to the one set in the prime series. As a result, nintendo had to remove the prime series from the official time line so that the story made sense. Also if you notice, Samus' zero suit is more erotic than in other games( she has a thong line riding up her butt, and her breasts are much larger). The original creators of metroid did not like this, because he always said that he wanted to give samus femininity without turning her into a sex object. From this it is clear that Samus was meant to be respected, and not portrayed as a weepy sex object. People aren't mad that they " gave" Samus this personality, they're mad that her personality was changed

She certainly did have a personality before.

Samus has always been portrayed as stoic, but she's had a consistent characterization throughout the series. Soparing the hatching in Metroid 2 and donating it to science in Super Metroid demonstrated her compassion. And don't forget that she was visibly saddened by the destruction of the Chozo Temple at the end of the first Metroid Prime game, and mourned the deaths of her fellow bounty hunters at the end of Prime 3. She's always been shown as a strong and compassionate character, who certainly wouldn't break down in front of Ridley and need a token black sidekick to save her. That characterization via her actions, not to mention the backstory-via-scans in Prime, were a much better way to tell a story in a Metroid game, and it worked.

Although I haven't played Other M yet, from what I understand it's Samus' backstory and how she came into the Federation. Wouldn't that put it chronologically before EVERY game in the series? So I feel she's allowed to be emotional and whatever a normal person would feel. She hasn't been battle hardened by slaughtering Metroids or Space Pirates for XX years. If this is the first story, then the games we've played before are her years later, many many missions later, where she's accustomed to saving other, ripping apart threats, and exploring entire planets and space stations.
